Personal profile in English

 

Frank Gieseler is the head of the Section Experimental Oncology, Palliative Care and Ethics in Oncology within the Department of Internal Medicine at the University Hospital of Luebeck. He also serves as president of the Schleswig-Holstein Cancer Society, chairman of the Institute for Cancer Epidemiology and vice-chairman of the Ethics Committee, both University of Luebeck, Germany.

 

His clinical and educational focus is the interdisciplinary care for patients with all kinds of solid tumors as well as patients with coagulation disorders, which is a frequent associated problem, especially for the older patients. Within the University Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein he took part in several clinical studies and served as principle investigator (PI) in phase II and phase III studies (1 study covering patients with  multiple myeloma, 1 study with patients after autologous bone marrow transplant, 2 studies pancreatic carcinoma, 2 studies pulmonary cancer). Basic research interests include mechanisms of cellular resistance and the molecular interactions between an activated coagulation system and the tumor cells. One important topic of current research projects is the role of extracellular vesicles (exosomes), their pathophysiological functions and their use for diagnostic and therapy.

 

Since 2003 he presents lectures on ethical issues in oncology and end of life matters. As a member of the ZBV (Center for Population and Patients' Care Research) and as chairman of the Institute for Cancer Epidemiology, both University of Luebeck, he takes actively part in national health care research projects.

 

Frank Gieseler has received numerous research grants including grants from the "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft" (DFG), which is the central research institution in Germany. He has published notable papers in international journals (e.g. J Clin Oncol, Lancet Oncol, Cancer Res, J Biol Chem, Oncogene) and served as a reviewer for, among others, Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology, the International Journal for Colorectal Disease, Biochemical Pharmacology, Toxicology, Oncogene, and Cell Biology International.

 

Professor Gieseler was born in 1958, he is married and has one daughter.
